History

  • Originally named Border Credit Union

  • Chartered April 14, 1954

  • Original location Laughlin Air Force Base

  • 1972 Val Verde County School Employees Credit Union merged with Border Credit Union

  • 1974 Bylaws were changed to expand the field of membership to include Maverick County

  • 1980 the credit union moved its main office outside L.A.F.B to Gibbs St.

  • 1984 Eagle Pass Branch was opened & then closed in 1989

  • 1987 the credit union became Federally chartered and insured by NCUA, this changing the name to Border Federal Credit Union

  • 1990 the nineties brought changes in data processing

  • 1992 BFCU signed on with Summit Data Processing Systems, to minimize transaction time

  • 1994 "Free Checking" accounts with no minimum balance or service charge were being offered

  • 1996 the first female President/CEO Maria J. Martinez (1996-present)

  • 1997 A Holiday Loan was introduced a 12-month loan set at $1,000 at a rate of 9.70APR

  • 2000 Eagle Pass Branch was re-opened

  • 2001 Partnered with Irwin Mortgage Company to offer mortgage loans to the membership for the first time in 20 years

  • 2002 Groundbreaking of New Main Office on Bedell Ave.

  • 2003 The Credit Union moves its Main Office operations to its new location at 2211. N. Bedell Ave.

  • 2004 BFCU was approved under grant by HUD to offer Housing Counseling

  • 2005 BFCU joins the Financial Outreach Program Alianza Financiera Hispana to offer services Free of Charge to the rapid growing Hispanic Community

  • 2005 Partners with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to provide free income tax preparation to low to moderate income families

  • 2007 Partnered with Money Concepts, Inc. to broaden investment opportunities

  • 2010 Department of Treasury certifies BFCU as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI)

  • 2011 NCUA Approved Expansion of our Community Charter to serve Crockett, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, La Salle, Real, Sutton, Terrell, Uvalde, & Zavala County

  • 2013 we currently have over 103 employees and serve 22,000 members & still growing

  • 2014 Opening of our new location inside H-E-B Del Rio In-Store Branch

  • 2014 will mark BFCU's 60th Anniversary of service to our members. This great milestone could not have been possible without their support.

  • 2015 BFCU transitioned to a new core processing system to better serve our members

  • 2015 Merger between Quemado FCU and Border Federal Credit Union effective September 30, 2015

  • 2016 CEO/President Maria Martinez, accepts “Juntos Avanzamos” designation on behalf of BFCU in Washington D.C. BFCU offers products and services tailored for Hispanic and Immigrant Communities.
